This month has been the busiest of my entire coaching life. In the last month I have been to Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and also hosted 3 Youth Team clinics at various locations around BC. It has been fun, but life on the road has it's challenges. I am happy to finally be back in Parksville where I can get some riding in with Sarah before the regular racing season begins.
I am coaching an incredible group of elite athletes this year. I am continuing (6years plus now)to work with Olympic hopeful Catharine Pendrel, who is riding for Luna this year and about to head south for a training camp. Joining Catharine is fellow Olympic hopeful Alex Wrubleski (Webcor) who finished 9th at the Elite World Cycling Championships last year. I am also working with aspiring National team rider Alison Testeroete (Aaron Capital). Along with these riders, I am happy to continue coaching Jamie Sparling (Trek/VW), Dan Skinner (Total Restoration) and of course Sarah (Total Restoration). It's great to see so many good riders continuing to improve year after year. It's going to be a very fun year!
Next month we start with the first Elitewave.com Technical Camp for triathletes. From April 6-12th, I'll be in Penticton working with Ironman athletes on their preparation for Ironman Canada 2008. The focus for this camp is on technical feedback. I will be providing the athletes with detailed feedback on their bike fit, cycling technique, swim technique and run technique. There are only 8 athletes in this camp. I am looking forward to a relaxed and productive week with these athletes.
Juston Laprairie is participating in the April camp. It's great to see him finally take on Ironman. Juston was one of the first strong Juniors I coached back in Calgary (circa 1993). He made Worlds in Cinncinati and then retired from sport to pursue his education and career. For the past 15 years, he has been a successful realtor in Calgary. This year, he has decided to go for Ironman, one of his life's goals. I think he will be surprised at how fast he goes. Interestingly, from the first group of triathlon juniors I started working with in 1993, four riders have represented Canada at the Elite level in Cycling. Two have represented Canada at the World Triathlon Cahmpionships. At Ironman Canada this year, 4 other athletes from the original Triathletics Sport Club will compete. It's amazing to see the long term impact sport has on people.
In April, I will launch the next phase of junior cycling in Nanaimo. If you are interested in learning more, please check out http://www.nanaimojuniorcycling.com/
